The Rituals of Life, Love & Religion
One of the things that I have been paying attention to for several months now is the human fascination with and practice of rituals. We, as people, believe that if we do things a certain way or speak certain words, those ritualistic sequences are the formulae that will get the outcomes we want due.
This ritualistic tendency is most evident in our religious practices – for instance, many of us believe that if we tithe, we will become wealth(ier) and (more) favored; if we address God a certain way and/or at certain times, our petitions will be heard and answered; if we abstain from premarital sex, we will get the perfect mate.
Our use of rituals is also evident in our loves and lives – if we show weakness by yielding or compromising, we will be taken advantage of by others (even by our ‘loved’ ones); if we talk to customer service representatives a certain way, then we will get the service we have paid for; if we become a yes-woman or yes-man to the boss, then our job is secure.
But is the ritual truly the ‘key’ to success, or is there something else we’re missing? Hmm…
